Neighbourhoods: Kensington Market

It is upon us! Sunshine is here again, and we can now relish in the heat and be reminded of what we longed for throughout the (not so long?) winter. And with the sunshine comes a good reason to wander one of the more eclectic neighbourhoods of the city — Kensington Market. This past Sunday marked the first Pedestrian Sunday Festival where one can drift without worry of motorized vehicles and share in the culture of the community. Started in 2004, Pedestrian Sundays feature live music, dancing, performance and games in addition to the regular shops, restaurants and spirit of the Market. This summer marks more foot-toe space more often — every Sunday in August and September will be motor free. Check out a full schedule here (please note the dates featured at the end of the video are last summer’s dates).

Here’s what I got up to:

An ever-popular patio, El Trompo Taco Bar is one of my fave restaurants in the market -- I stopped in for lunch.

I gorged on this Pico de Gallo ($3.99) and also ordered my favourite menu item & house speciality Tacos Al Pastor ($9.75).

I headed out in the sun to the Bellevue Square Park to people watch.

And quickly realized I needed some shades. Kensington offers a plethora of cheap sunnies -- this selection from the non-sign-posted "Mike's" at 237 Augusta Ave.

The afternoon reaching a lull I headed to the Moonbean Cafe, where there is no shortage of cold drinks, or (front and back) patio space. A good place to kick back with some summer (course) readings if you can concentrate without eavesdropping (I cannot).

I could spend at least another blog discussing the cheese, spice, chocolate and other speciality markets to be found, not to mention the entertainment that is easily stumbled upon. The truth is, Kensington is best done often! I’ll be seeing you.
