U of T’s BEST BROWNIE CONTEST-finals!

December 2, 2010 · 3 Comments

As you know, the final round of the Best Brownie Contest took place on December 1st, 2010. We had a wonderful turnout, and enjoyed providing free brownies to the students, staff members and faculty members in Sid’s Café. The three brownie finalists were competing to win bragging rights, the Whisk Trophy, $50 meal cards and a $100 gift card of their choice.

Before we reveal the winner, we would like to thank several people who helped make this contest happen. A big THANK YOU to:

Student Life, where the idea originated from.

Chestnut Residence for facilitating the baking of the brownies.

Sous Chefs Edward Low and Olivia Boutilier for spending the weekend baking.

Management at Sid's Cafe for allowing us to use the space.

Macrina Smart for helping us with the voting process.

Everybody who submitted a brownie recipe; they were all delightful!

On voting day, a total of 480 brownies were tasted and voted on. It was an intense contest, because all three of the brownies were so perfect! The sinful brownie, submitted by Amy Hu, was chewy, with a hint of peanut butter, raisins, walnuts, and a drizzle of white chocolate. The healthy brownie, submitted by Joanne Bacon from OISE, was chewy with a fun texture from the flax meal and walnuts. The local brownie, submitted by Giovanna Thron, was also chewy, but tasted of maple syrup. Every voter had a favorite brownie; some preferred the texture, others preferred the depth of the chocolate, and others preferred the sweetness.

At the end of the contest, it was clear that U of T loved the maple syrupy taste of Giovanna’s local brownie. Congratulations Giovanna Thron for being U of T’s first Brownie Expert!

Congratulations, also, to Amy and Joanne for such incredible brownies. You inspired many people to try flax meal and raisins in their brownies. J

For those who were unable to come out to taste the brownies, don’t worry! From December 8-21, 2010, we will be serving the winning brownie across campus! And if you want to try baking the winning brownie at home, check back here tomorrow for the recipe and Giovanna’s story.
